Mastering the Art of Selecting Ideal Essential Oils for Your Aromatherapy Massage Clients

The potency of scent is often underestimated. It navigates straight to our limbic system, sometimes referred to as the emotional control center of our brain. Our response to certain aromas can be both intuitive and instantaneous, making scent a powerful tool, particularly in the realm of aromatherapy massage.

The profound effects of the right aromas during an aromatherapy massage can work miracles. They can:

  • Act as potent stress relievers, helping to unclench long-held tensions

  • Encourage deep-seated emotional tranquility by soothing the nervous system

  • Alleviate pain in muscles and joints, promoting physical relaxation

  • Mitigate swelling, supporting the body's natural healing process

  • And much more, making each aromatherapy massage session a truly transformative experience

Nevertheless, the task of selecting the right essential oils for your clients can sometimes be a daunting one.

You may find yourself inundated with questions like: Which essential oils are safest for an aromatherapy massage? What is the most effective method to apply them – through diffusion, or incorporated into a massage oil or butter? How do I determine which oils harmonize best together to yield the desired effect?

Given the vast variety of choices, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. Trust me, I've been there as a former Massage Therapist and educator myself.

However, I assure you that it is entirely feasible to approach aromatherapy with confidence. You can indeed gain the knowledge and experience to discern the most suitable choices for your client, ensuring you're using essential oils safely and effectively. By understanding the nuances of aromatherapy, you can create the most potent blends tailored to your client's unique needs, amplifying the benefits of each massage session.

Here's an example of an Aromatherapy massage oil and WHY it works so well . . .

This Aromatherapy Massage oil is made with just three ingredients . . .

Vanilla, Lavender, and Orange Massage Oil

A simple massage oil to relieve pain and promote relaxation.

Ingredients
  • 1 oz (30 ml) Vanilla-infused Jojoba oil (Simmondsia chinensis)

  • 7 drops Lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia)

  • 5 drops Sweet Orange essential oil (Citrus sinensis)

Equipment
  • One 1 oz (30 ml) Amber Glass Bottle with Coned Cap

Directions
  • Pour the Vanilla-infused Jojoba oil into the glass bottle.

  • Add the essential oils and tighten the cap.

  • Gently shake the bottle to combine.

The research on Lavender and Orange essential oils supports their actions.

We know that Lavender is primarily made up of the natural components linalool and linalyl acetate and that about 95% of Sweet Orange essential oil is the component d-limonene.

These components have been shown to reduce inflammation and relieve pain—excellent choices for a sore muscle massage, to ease tension, or simply to support overall relaxation.

I'll tell you more about this in the webinar!

I focus on teaching Aromatherapy these days, but I still have a love for Massage Therapy.
