Lotion Bar Recipe with 3 Skin-Safe Essential Oils

I want to show you how to make lotion bars with essential oils!

Lotion bars with essential oils are a fun, convenient way to take moisturizer with you without worrying about messy leaks in your bag.

You can carry a lotion bar in a small baggie or in a hard-shelled travel soap carrier.

When you hold the lotion bar against your body or warm it between your hands, the bar will melt just enough to leave a nourishing layer of moisture on your skin.

A lot of people like to use lotion bars with essential oils after showering at the gym or after washing their hands in a public restroom (public restroom soap can be pretty harsh.)

This DIY body lotion bar recipe includes essential oils to help perk you up—so you feel more energized and optimistic!

Watch me make these lotion bars in this video! (The recipe directions are below.)

Energizing Morning Body Lotion Bar

Start your day off right! Feel optimistic and energized while taking care of your skin.

Ingredients
  • 7 oz (210 ml) Marula oil (Sclerocarya birrea)

  • 5.5 oz (154 g) Beeswax pellets (Cera alba)

  • 4 oz (112 g) Coconut oil (Cocos nucifera)

  • 3.5 oz (98 g) Cocoa butter (Theobroma cacao)

  • 60 drops distilled Lime essential oil (Citrus aurantifolia)

  • 40 drops White Pine essential oil (Pinus strobus)

  • 30 drops Rosemary essential oil (Rosmarinus officinalis ct. camphor)

Directions
  • Set up the "Stovetop Melting Method."Place a Pyrex measuring cup in a soup pot that's ¼ full of gently boiling water. Your Pyrex should hold at least 20 oz (600 ml) of liquid. Leave the handle hanging outside the pot so it doesn't get too hot.

  • Melt the beeswax in the Pyrex.

  • Add the cocoa butter and melt.

  • Add the coconut oil, and marula oil. Melt, stirring gently with a glass stirring rod or a stainless steel spoon.

  • Remove the melted butter from heat and add your essential oils, stirring gently.

  • Pour your melted lotion bars into your silicone molds, and let the bars harden.

Instructions

Tip: It helps to measure your ingredients before you make the recipe so everything is ready to go. (Especially your essential oils.)

You'll need a silicone mold for your lotion bars. Any size or shape of mold will work! For the silicone mold I'm using in the video, this recipe will make about five 4 oz (112 g) lotion bars.

If you run out of space in your silicone mold, that's okay.

Just let the first batch of lotion bars harden, and take them out. The remaining blend in your Pyrex will solidify a bit, so you can put it back in the soup pot and reheat it to make the rest of your lotion bars.

You can customize this recipe with any essential oils you like.

I chose White Pine, distilled Lime, and Rosemary because they're so good for mental clarity and positive energy. They help sweep away old, stagnant emotions and usher in a refreshed, upbeat outlook.

NOTE: I used distilled Lime essential oil in this lotion bar recipe.

Be sure to use DISTILLED Lime essential oil, since it's not phototoxic.

If you only have cold-pressed Lime essential oil, I suggest leaving it out of your lotion bar recipe or using Sweet Orange (Citrus sinensis) instead. Cold-pressed Lime essential oil is phototoxic and can use negative reactions on your skin in sunlight—such as burning, blistering, or discoloration.

However, when Lime is DISTILLED, the distillation process removes the phototoxic components. So these DIY lotion bars are safe for your skin, even if you want to use them at the beach!

Have fun making your lotion bars! (I bet you'll have enough to give to friends, too!)
