Jessica was “born into essential oils” in South Africa

Jessica Lutge is a Certified Aromatherapist, Cosmetic Scientist, Natural Skincare Formulator, and an Aromahead graduate!

Jessica says she was “born into essential oils.”

Her parents were pioneers in the essential oil industry in South Africa, starting a company that empowers farmers while creating high-quality, pure plant extracts and aromatherapy products.

Eventually, a subsidiary company was created—Scatters Oils. Scatters supplies bulk essential oils and carriers.

Today, Jessica is involved in the organic division of Scatters (which has offices in South Africa and Florida). In her graduate profile, she says:

“We work with the government to uplift rural communities
in South Africa while developing the essential oil market.”

All of Scatters’ products are sourced from Africa and Madagascar.

They work with over 30 farms to ensure the farmers have the plant material, equipment, and education to not only produce a healthy, organic crop for distillation—but to uplift their communities with jobs and income.

Jessica’s team can help a farmer identify the best species of plants to grow on their land, and guide them in meeting international organic standards.

And because they value science and chemistry, they can even analyze a small percentage of a farmer’s essential oil, and let them know if anything can be done to improve the oil’s quality—such as giving more or less water to the plants, or if another growing season is needed to produce the best product.

Aromahead’s co-founder visits South Africa!

Jessica’s values of community and sustainability are a lot like our own at Aromahead.

Our co-founder Andrea Butje even visited Scatters in 2014! The Scatters team gave her a tour of a 100% certified organic Tea Tree plantation, and then took her to a citrus processing facility.

Andrea visited South Africa during the perfect season for citruses!

The bright citrus fruits had been carried to the facility in large trucks. She got to see them washed and sent into the cold-pressing machine. The entire fruit is used! The machine presses it to extract the juice and essential oil (which is found in the fruit’s rind). The oil is separated off, and the juice is condensed for safe export. Scatters gets the fresh essential oil!

(I can’t stop imagining how good that facility must have smelled while all those citruses were being pressed!)

Selling essential oils in the US

Jessica and her husband also founded a company in the United States!

It’s called BeHale. BeHale makes organic essential oils available for consumers in the US market. They have organic essential oils, carrier oils, diffusers and burners, and you can even buy organic teas from them!

Jessica and her husband donate 6% of every sale back to the essential oil industry in Africa.

On their website, they write:

“The African continent is magnificent with a diversity of culture,
race, heritage, climate, and landscape. It is our home . . .

Our efforts are directed at equipping, educating,
and financially supporting [African] farmers.”

Join the aromatherapy community!

Scatters is a well-respected member of the international essential oil community.

We’re honored to count Jessica among our graduates at Aromahead!

It warms our hearts that someone with such a strong reputation chose Aromahead for her essential oil education. A big thanks to Jessica for doing what she can to uplift rural African communities—and for being a part of our own!
