A homemade bathroom scrub so safe you can mix it with your hands!

I use this homemade bathroom scrub on my tub, shower walls, sinks, and anywhere that needs a good, deep scrub. It's got an abrasive element (thanks to the baking soda) and stain-lifting power (thanks to the vinegar), and it's so nourishing for my skin that I don't need to use cleaning gloves. (I don't like using chemical cleaners that aren't safe for the skin or for breathing in!)

I make this recipe in a glass container that holds at least two cups (roughly 470 gm). It won't take up that much space, but I leave the extra room because the vinegar causes it to bubble and foam and I don't want it to overflow.

I Love My Bathroom Scrub

  • 1 cup (235 gm) Baking soda

  • 3 tbsp (45 ml) Castile soap

  • 1 tbsp (15 ml) White vinegar

  • 15 drops Orange essential oil (Citrus sinensis)

  • 15 drops Tea Tree essential oil (Melaleuca alternifolia)

  • 10 drops Peppermint essential oil (Mentha x piperita)

Directions:

Mix your baking soda, castile soap, and white vinegar in your container. (I like to add the vinegar last, so I can see everything bubble up!) Then add your essential oils and stir. (Or mix it up with your fingers!)

The recipe will make a thick paste—sometimes so thick that you can mold it into shapes. If you want it to be a little thinner, just add more castile soap. To use it, just put a little on your sponge and scrub away.

Note: Using too much vinegar with castile soap can "unsaponify" the soap, but using the small amount in this recipe is fine.

If you make a large quantity ahead of time and your scrub texture gets too hard after a few weeks, you can simply add more castile soap.

You can watch me make this recipe in a YouTube video and see the consistency of the bathroom scrub when it's all mixed up.

I chose essential oils for this recipe that smell good and are great for cleaning because they get rid of bacteria and viruses. And when I clean, I know I'm breathing in essential oils that are great for my health and immunity. But you can really choose any of your favorite oils for your homemade bathroom scrub.

This recipe might make you want to clean your bathroom more often . . . Okay, maybe not! But it will make it a lot more fun when it does come time to clean.

Green cleaning can be especially helpful if you or your family suffers from allergies.
