3 Ways to Use 1 Essential Oil for Stress Relief
Patchouli Essential Oil: The Remarkable Natural Stress Reliever
Patchouli essential oil (Pogostemon cablin), an underappreciated gem in the world of aromatherapy, is your one-stop solution for natural stress relief. Known for its soothing effects on the nervous system and inflammation, patchouli is a versatile essential oil that truly stands out.
Its unique properties made it worthy of a special mention in my book, 'The Heart of Aromatherapy,' where it was featured as a key component in various blends, even those meant for children. It's worth noting that the aromatic profile of patchouli essential oil is distinct from the more widely recognized incense, revealing a complex and intriguing scent that will undoubtedly entice the olfactory senses.
What sets patchouli apart from the majority of essential oils is its impressive longevity. With time, it not only retains its qualities but evolves in aroma, maturing like a fine wine. This is particularly noteworthy in an industry where the quality of most oils wanes with time.
For those who may not prefer patchouli for stress relief, vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides) can be an equally effective alternative in the following recipes.
Here are three diverse ways to incorporate patchouli essential oil into your routine for stress relief:
Inhalation Method
Create a custom aromatherapy inhaler using 2 drops of patchouli essential oil and 4 drops of sweet orange essential oil (Citrus sinensis). This portable, discreet inhaler can accompany you anywhere, providing an immediate calming effect whenever you need to take a moment to relax and recenter.
Roll-On Method
For those who prefer a topical application, you can concoct a soothing blend using 10 ml of jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) combined with 2 drops of patchouli oil and 4 drops of lavender oil (Lavandula angustifolia). This can be conveniently carried in a 10 ml roller-ball bottle for quick, stress-relieving application throughout your day.
Bathing Method
Lastly, a soothing bedtime bath can be achieved by creating a bath salt with 2 oz (56 g) of pink Himalayan salt, 1 tablespoon of jojoba oil, 2 drops of patchouli oil, and 3 drops of Roman Chamomile oil (Chamaemelum nobile). This indulgent blend will not only alleviate stress but also promote overall body relaxation.
Please note, however, that oils can make the bathtub slippery. If you'd like to circumvent this, you could use Castile soap as a dispersing agent instead of a carrier oil. Just remember to add the salts directly to the bath water to avoid them hardening due to the Castile soap.
In addition to patchouli, the other essential oils used in these recipes - sweet orange, lavender, and Roman chamomile - are also exceptional at providing natural stress relief.
