Tips for Blending Essential Oils by Aroma
One of my favorite methods of blending essential oils is to go by the aroma.
It'It's an amazing process because learning the art of aromas never really ends. The more you learn about essential oils, the more creative you can be when blending according to their aromas. Here are a few tips that might help, whether you're a newcomer to Aromatherapy or have been blending for years.
First, let's talk about the different notes in aromatherapy:
Top notes: These are the first scents you notice when inhaling a blend. They're bright, clear, and vibrant. Citrus oils, such as Lemon or Grapefruit, are examples of top notes.
Middle notes (or "heart notes"): These are full, soft, and rich scents. They help smooth out the edges of a blend and prevent certain scents from overpowering others. Many florals, like Lavender or Geranium, are middle notes.
Base notes: These notes are warm and earthy, providing depth to a blend. Oils like Patchouli or Vetiver are examples of base notes.
A balanced blend incorporates top, middle, and base notes, all of which can be detected in a single deep inhale.
However, you don't have to create a balanced blend. You can also choose to blend "like with like." This means you can blend only top notes, only middle notes, or only base notes. This approach can be particularly effective if you want to evoke specific emotions. A blend of nothing but top notes can be uplifting and energizing!
One of the best methods for blending essential oils by aroma is the "drop-by-drop blending technique."
Start by adding a single drop of essential oil to a carrier oil or an empty bottle, and then smell it. Next, add one drop of another oil and smell it again. Record each drop you add with a little slash mark on a piece of paper.
Continue this process until you've reached the desired amount of oil in your recipe or until you love the aroma. Smell the blend after adding each drop to notice how the scent develops new layers and personality. It's amazing how much a single drop of oil can shift the aroma of a blend.
