How a life of service led Maria here.
I was born in Honduras to a Spanish father and a mother of Lebanese heritage. Living the richness of these 3 cultures has given me an appreciation for diversity and the ability to connect with people from all walks of life. My love for the outdoors, especially the ocean and the mountains, comes from growing up in the coastal regions of Honduras.
Seeing the struggles of so many people while growing up in a developing country gave me a great dose of awareness about poverty and what people spared from it can do to alleviate it. I had the opportunity to graduate from law school while living in Honduras and direct a chamber of commerce in my community. These combined experiences taught me to value justice, education, taking care of nature, humanity, and solidarity. My years in Honduras gave me the desire to help others and the perspective to live life with gratitude, empathy, and purpose.
I recently completed the Aromatherapy Certification Program at Aromahead Institute and joined the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy as a Level 2 Certified Professional and the Alliance of International Aromatherapists.
My core values and driving principles are faith, family, nature, community, and wellness.
My current position as Community Wellness Case Manager in a non-profit community health clinic in Greenville SC allows me to work with underserved communities experiencing life transitions and trauma.
I plan to advocate for the safe use of essential oils and help secure funding to make aromatherapy more accessible as a complementary therapy for our patients.
My plan is to focus on the use of aromatherapy as an effective and complementary intervention for the prevention and management of secondary traumatic stress, burnout, compassion fatigue in helping professionals and people going through life transitions and trauma.
I am currently enrolled in the Aromahead Institute Teacher Training and Leadership Program to advance my studies and provide awareness and education on the safe and effective use of essential oils for these conditions.
What I loved the most was the holistic organizational culture at Aromahead! I received excellent education, encouragement, love, and support from the instructors and the student forum while working on my Aromatherapy Certification Program. My aromatherapy journey has been transformational and a lot of fun! I enjoyed every component of the curriculum as each provided knowledge and clarity in a different way.
