How to Use Essential Oils for Cuts and Scrapes...Safely
Our 3 favorite essential oils for wound healing—plus a must-have recipe!
Here at the Aromahead Institute, we know the power of essential oils firsthand.
When you use your essential oils properly, you’re able to unlock all of their incredible therapeutic benefits.
However, you want to be certain that you’re always using your oil safely—especially when you’re applying them onto your skin or using them with children.
This becomes even more important when you use your oils for an injury or on broken skin.
How to use your essential oils properly to heal your skin
While you can use essential oils to heal minor cuts and scrapes, it’s important to put safety first!
Essential oils are highly concentrated, and we don't want to just apply them straight out of the bottle to injured skin.
Before you apply your oils to your skin—or to your child’s skin!—you want to be sure to use the right oils and dilute them in a carrier. Always wash the injury with soap and water first, so you can ensure the wound is as clean as possible.
And of course, if your cut or scrape is serious, please don’t hesitate to get medical attention!
Which essential oils to use for cuts and scrapes
When deciding which essential oils to use in a blend meant to help heal cuts and scrapes, we want to look for oils that are able to:
Calm pain and inflammation
Support the skin’s healing process
Clean out the germs and reduce the potential for infection
We created a blend that features 3 essential oils and one carrier that offer all of these therapeutic benefits!
This blend is made in a base of aloe vera gel. While aloe vera is best known for its ability to soothe the pain of a sunburn, it’s also great for soothing red, itchy, or irritated skin and calming discomfort.
Lavender Oil is well-known for helping to repair skin damage and wounds and helps to take out the stinging from a cut or a scrape. That’s because its main chemical components, linalool and linalyl acetate, have been proven to help calm inflammation.
Tea Tree Oil will really help to reduce the potential of infection. This oil has been well researched, so we know it’s amazing for reducing the presence of germs and clearing infections. That’s because it’s rich in the component terpinen-4-ol.
Frankincense Oil helps reduce pain, burning and irritation from the cut or scrape. Frankincense is rich in the component α-Pinene which helps calm inflammation and relieve pain.
How to make an essential oil blend for cuts and scrapes
This essential oil recipe is fun and easy to make. Plus, it’s so effective and safe for kids!
Children are smaller than grown-ups, and their systems are often more responsive. That’s why we use a lower essential oil drop count in this recipe, and only work with exceptionally gentle oils.
Each of the oils in this blend is great for kids! They’re gentle enough not to overwhelm their systems but are still strong enough to be effective.

When a kiddo comes to you with an everyday cut or scrape, you can cleanse the area gently with soap and warm water. Then, apply this blend to your hand then apply it to the area that was just scraped.
Then you can top it all off with a fun band-aid! Reapply as needed. Even when the wound scabs over, this blend will continue to encourage healing.
Not only will this blend provide instant pain relief, but you’ll also find that it offers emotional relief as well. Children and adults alike find that they feel calmer and centered as this blend works to clean out the cut or scrape.
You also have the option of including Solubol in this blend, which can keep the essential oils dispersed through the aloe. 1 ml of Solubol would do the trick here.
One last tip!
Be sure to store your final blend in the fridge! The coolness will feel so soothing to wounded, inflamed areas. Plus, refrigerating it will help extend your blend’s shelf life. This is especially important because there are no preservatives in the aloe vera gel—it’s 100% pure!
