About this course

Make a fist and hold it up. That is the size of your heart, and it has beaten around a hundred thousand times since this time yesterday, without a single instruction from you. Every body system carries a story like that, and this course tells all ten of them: skin, muscle and bone, breath, digestion, circulation, lymph and immunity, nerves, hormones, reproduction, and the kidneys that keep your inner sea steady.

Each module opens with the big picture, walks through the structures and how they work, and then asks the question that matters to a practitioner: what happens when this system struggles, and where can aromatherapy help? You will follow an essential oil molecule through the skin barrier, watch a nerve signal cross a synapse, and see why the sense of smell reaches the emotional brain faster than any other sense. Along the way you learn to recognize red flags, understand your scope of practice, and choose oils by what the body is doing, with the reasoning to back the choice.

Five pillars run through every module: anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, aromatic chemistry, and safety. By the end they read as one subject. That is what lets you reason about a client's situation with confidence, whether you are supporting a family member at home or building a clinical practice.

If you have wondered…

This course answers the questions you keep asking.

Why does the same blend calm one person and do less for another?
How does an essential oil get from the skin into the bloodstream, and what decides how much arrives?
Where does the line sit between supportive care and a condition that needs a physician?
Why do dilution guidelines change with age, and what is happening in the skin that makes the difference?
What you'll gain

What you will walk away with.

  • A working map of all ten body systems, deep enough to hold its own in a college anatomy course and told so that it stays with you.
  • The pathophysiology of the conditions clients bring to aromatherapists most often, with the mechanism behind each one.
  • A clear sense of where your work begins and where medical care leads, system by system.
  • The reasoning to choose an essential oil for what the body is doing, and to explain that choice to a client in plain words.
  • Safety that comes from understanding: why dilution, age, route, and condition change what is appropriate.
Inside the course

The curriculum, module by module.

Ten body systems and a closing bonus, told the way a great documentary tells it, with 175 readings and 12 review quizzes along the way. The modules, in the order you take them:

Welcome & Orientation

A clear orientation to the course, a working understanding of how five intertwined pillars (anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, aromatic chemistry, and safety) weave through every module, practical strategies for studying with depth and ease, and confidence in learning with strong scope-of-practice awareness.

The Integumentary System

A practical and pathophysiology-informed understanding of how the skin protects, senses, repairs, and communicates, along with how topical aromatherapy interacts with barrier function, inflammation, healing, pigmentation, and systemic exposure.

The Musculoskeletal System

A practical understanding of bones, muscles, joints, ligaments, tendons, and connective tissue, along with how aromatherapy can support movement, comfort, recovery, and safe topical care.

The Respiratory System

From the nose and sinuses to the lungs and alveoli, how the body breathes, exchanges gases, and protects itself from inhaled threats. You'll also learn how inhalation allows essential oils to interact with the respiratory system, where aromatherapy can offer supportive care, and when medical referral is needed.

The Digestive System

A practical understanding of how the digestive system breaks down food, absorbs nutrients, moves waste, communicates with the nervous system, and how aromatherapy can support digestive comfort, appetite, nausea, stress-related digestive issues, and healthy boundaries around digestive care.

The Circulatory System

A practical understanding of how the heart, blood, and blood vessels move oxygen, nutrients, hormones, heat, and aromatic constituents through the body, along with how circulation helps explain systemic exposure, application-site choices, and safe aromatherapy support.

The Lymphatic & Immune Systems

A practical understanding of how the lymphatic system moves fluid, filters waste, and supports immune function throughout the body, along with how immune responses work, why they sometimes become overactive or underactive, and how aromatherapy can support both systems safely and effectively within appropriate scope.

The Nervous System

The system that senses, decides, and directs them all: the body's network of communication and control. Every second, without a moment of conscious effort, it gathers news from the world and from deep inside you, weighs it, and sends out the orders that keep you alive and moving through your day.

The Endocrine System

The nervous system's great partner in control: the body's network of glands and hormones. Where the nervous system speaks in fast electrical signals to precise targets, the endocrine system sends chemical messengers drifting through the bloodstream to reach cells all over the body, shaping the slow and steady rhythms of a life: growth, metabolism, the daily cycle of energy and rest, the response to stress, and the balance of sugar, salt, and water in your tissues.

The Reproductive System

The sex cells, the menstrual cycle, conception, pregnancy, birth and lactation, and the reproductive life cycle, with aromatherapy support for each stage.

The Urinary System

Inside the kidney and the nephron, how urine is made, fluid and salt balance, and the kidney's hidden career as a gland.

Bonus: The Whole Person

A closing reflection, offered as a bonus at the end of the course, on caring for the body as one living whole, with the body as seen through Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda.

Final Exam and Certificate of Completion

A final exam, and a certificate of completion for your records and your credential file.

Every module closes with a summary, verified research references, and review questions, and the whole course is yours as a downloadable PDF with an index.

Where this fits in your journey

Every hour counts toward Clinical Aromatherapist.

This is the anatomy and physiology course inside Part 2 of the Aromatherapy Certification Program, taken alongside your mentored case studies. It comes with the Certification Bundle and the Scholars Program, and it sells on its own for anyone who wants the science, including students who own the Essential Oil Specialist coursework and graduates of the earlier A&P edition who want the new one. Every hour counts toward your NAHA, AIA, and IFPA credentials. Nurses, massage therapists, and other clinicians will know the ground and meet it read a new way, through the eyes of an aromatherapist.

If you completed the earlier edition, Anatomy & Physiology for ACP, your certification stands as it is. This course is a new journey through the same body, taken because you want it.

Questions, answered

A Journey Through Anatomy, Physiology & Pathophysiology FAQ

How is the course delivered?

Online and self-paced, in your student account at my.aromahead.com. Readings, illustrations, review quizzes, and downloads open the moment you enroll, and your progress saves as you go.

How long does it take?

Most students give each body system about ten hours. Take it in a season or over a year. There is no deadline, and your access is for life.

Do I need any science background?

The course is written for someone meeting anatomy for the first time, and each module starts with the big picture and builds from there. If you have studied anatomy before, expect to go deeper than you did.

I am a nurse, a massage therapist, or another medical professional. What is here for me?

A full refresher on all ten systems, and a second reading of the anatomy you know through the eyes of an aromatherapist: where an essential oil enters, how the body handles it, and what each system's conditions mean for choosing oils and keeping clients safe. The practical side runs through every module, from dilution built on skin anatomy to the red flags that send someone to medical care. Karen came to aromatherapy from nursing, and she wrote this as the bridge she wished she had.

Do I need to own essential oils to take it?

The course is about the body and how oils interact with it, so the reading alone carries you through. A few familiar oils on hand make the aromatherapy sections more vivid.

Is there an exam?

Each module ends with review questions, and the course ends with a final exam and a certificate of completion.

Does it count toward certification?

Yes. The hours count toward NAHA, AIA, and IFPA credentials, and the course is Part 2 of the Aromatherapy Certification Program.

I completed the earlier A&P course. Do I need this one?

Anatomy & Physiology for ACP counts toward your certification in full, so this edition is here only if you want the new journey.

I own the Essential Oil Specialist course. Can I take this on its own?

Yes. It sells on its own, and it is also included when you continue to Part 2 of the certification.

Does it count for massage CEUs?

Yes, the same way our other courses do.

What is the refund policy?

Change your mind in the first seven days and we refund you in full.

Is it in a bundle?

It comes with the Certification Bundle and the Scholars Program, each at a saving over buying the courses separately.
