Let's Make Linen Spray for Sleep (with Neroli Essential Oil)

When did you last feel truly relaxed? Neroli can help. The oil calms the nervous system and helps us destress, and it inspires feelings of emotional contentment and balance. No wonder it suits bedtime, when most of us are ready to set the day down. This linen spray for the bed is made with lavender hydrosol, and it takes only minutes to put together.

Neroli's Seems Like a Dream Linen Spray

You will find this recipe in the book The Heart of Aromatherapy by Andrea Butje.

Make this linen spray for sleep in a 2 oz (60 ml) spray bottle.

  • 2 fl oz (60 ml) Lavender hydrosol (Lavandula angustifolia)
  • 5 drops Neroli essential oil (Citrus aurantium var. amara)
  • 7 drops Opopanax essential oil (Commiphora guidotti)
  • 2 ml Solubol

Combine the hydrosol, Solubol, and essential oils. Shake well. Spritz around the bed, especially under the pillow. Shake the bottle before each use. That's it!

Why neroli is called precious

Neroli is precious. A huge amount of hand-picked orange blossoms goes into making only a small amount of oil, and that is exactly what accounts for the high cost. The aroma itself is very strong and potent. A little goes a long way!

A substitute if neroli is too costly

Too costly? Neroli/Petitgrain Bigarade works beautifully in this spray. Neroli comes from the blossoms of the bitter orange tree, while petitgrain bigarade is distilled from the leaves of that same tree. Bigarade simply means it comes from the orange tree. There are different kinds of petitgrain essential oil, so the full name matters.

Keep it fresh, and more help at bedtime

Freshness matters. Because the hydrosol is water-based and the blend has no preservative to keep it fresh, plan to mix up a new bottle every few weeks. If you want more ideas for winding down, the essential oils for sleep field guide gathers the oils, methods, and safety notes in one place. For a second spray, try the Tamala and Sweet Orange linen mist recipe, made in frankincense hydrosol.

Common questions

Why does the spray need shaking each time?

Water separates. Since hydrosol is water-based, the essential oils will not stay mixed in on their own, so Solubol, a natural dispersant, holds them dispersed, and a shake before each use keeps every spritz even.

How long does a bottle keep?

Mix up a new bottle every few weeks, since nothing in the blend preserves it.

Can I skip neroli and still get a relaxing spray?

Yes. Neroli/Petitgrain Bigarade can be used in place of neroli in this spray, and the Tamala and Sweet Orange linen mist is another calming option at bedtime.
