Make Your Own Yoga Mat Cleaner Spray
Have you ever been in a yoga studio where they have mats for you to borrow?
After class, everyone who has borrowed a mat always pads on over to the bottles of yoga mat cleaner spray and towels. People who bring their own mats often use the spray cleaners, too. Sometimes everyone shares!
Yoga mat cleaner sprays prevent bacteria from spreading on the porous surface of the mat. That's why it's important to clean your mat after every session. It's also important to use cleaners that are all natural and safe for your skin—your skin comes into a lot of contact with that yoga mat.
You can make your own yoga mat cleaner with essential oils—and there are so many oils with antibacterial, antiviral, and disinfectant properties that you can get really creative!
Here's a great recipe to make your own yoga mat cleaner that you may have the ingredients for already.
I call this recipe "Calm and Clean" because it got such a relaxing, bright aroma. I use a 1 oz (30 ml) glass spray bottle. You can watch me make it and see the amounts in a YouTube video I made about cleaning your yoga mat.
The basic recipe is 20 drops of essential oil for every 1 oz (30 ml) of water. If you'd like to make more (and maybe share with the other yogis in your class!) you can just increase the recipe. I suggest making this blend fresh every few weeks.
“Center and Clean” Yoga Mat Spray
Yoga mat cleaner sprays prevent bacteria from spreading on the porous surface of the mat.
Ingredients
1 fl oz (30 ml) water
10 drops Lavender Oil (Lavandula angustifolia)
10 drops Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia)
3 mls Solubol dispersant (optional)
Equipment
One 1 oz (30 ml) Glass Spray Bottle
Directions
Pour the water into the bottle.
If you prefer to use a solubol/dispersant in your room spray, simply add 4 drops of solubol per 1 drop of essential oil.
Add the essential oils, close the bottle, and shake gently.
You can also use your spray to create a beautiful aroma in the room before you begin your yoga practice or even during a class.
Here are some additional oil ideas for making your own yoga mat cleaner:
Orange (Citrus sinensis) — uplift your spirit and open your heart
Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis ct. camphor) — focus and calm your mind
Cardamom (Ellettaria cardamomum) — encourages balance and open breathing
Frankincense (Boswellia carterii) — support meditation and open your breath
Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha) — invite peace in place of worry
Cleaning your mat with your own spray can leave a hint of your favorite scent lingering on your mat, which you'll smell the next time you unroll it! (What a nice way to begin a yoga session!)
